Washington Youth Academy cadets are trained to be part of a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). In the class of 2015-1, EVERY cadet was trained -- for the first time ever. They will be leaders in their communities when it comes to responding to a major disaster. CERT is a national program curriculum sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Cadets learn about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.
The Washington Youth Academy Foundation funds CERT packs for those cadets who engage with their local emergency management agency and become active members of a local CERT. You can help by donating here [click here].
