10/9/2016

Friends and Family, do you know a State or Federal employee?  If so, they will be making decisions on what charities to support during the Combined Federal Campaign and the State Combined Fund Drive.  Please give them the Washington Youth Academy Foundation charity number and urge them to support the Academy and cadets.  The CFC code is 97172 and the State Fund Drive code is 1479426.  The Washington Youth Academy Foundation was established to provide support to the Academy programs and the current and past cadets.  Support has included programs like community service, robotics and the science curriculum with a 3D printer.  They have also awarded over $70,000 in scholarships and job training support for graduates of the Academy.  The support is only possible through donations.  CFC and CFD is the easy way to make a difference.

Job Opportunities for WYA Graduates!

5/1/2016

BBSI (Barrett Business Services, Inc.) is pleased and very proud to be able to offer employment to ANY WYA GRADUATING CADET or Cadet Graduate in the Puget Sound area between Olympia & S. Seattle that is 18 YRS OR OLDER and has or can count on RELIABLE TRANSPORTATION.
BBSI also has offices in MOSES LAKE, PASCO & YAKIMA that may need help and I’d be happy to pass on Cadet information to those areas in an attempt to help them also get gainful employment. Most work in those areas will revolve around AGRICULTURE in processing or packing houses.
In the Puget Sound area, work can vary between woodworking, plastics manufacturing, sheet metal, general warehouse, landscaping, assembly processes, laundry/linen services and others. Wages will vary between $9.50/hr and $14/hr, depending on location and type of work….most jobs will pay +/- $11/hr and most will give the Cadets a chance to earn a PERMANENT POSITION with that company as/if they wish.
All jobs will require basic work clothes (long pants/shirt/shoes)…some will require steel toed shoes (Payless Shoes or Walmart for under $30). You can also apply to the Foundation for work clothing assistance (click here)They may be issued SAFETY EQUIPMENT such as eye protection, ear plugs, or gloves.
Shifts available will include DAY SHIFT (usually a start time between 6 and 7am, SWING (usually a start time between 2 and 3pm) and GRAVEYARD (usually a start time between 10 and 11pm). Most will be 8-hr shifts but some may be ROTATING 12-hr shifts, depending on where they are placed. Cadets may need to be willing to work a shift besides day shift in order to be placed quickly.
While most will be general labor (lift/carry/stack/count/simple assembly or assembly-line work), some will require additional skills like ability to read a tape measure, simple math, mechanical aptitude, ability to use simple hand tools.
Most of the available work is between Tacoma and Seattle. RELIABLE TRANSPORTATION & ATTENDANCE IS VITAL FOR THEIR SUCCESS.
This could really be a WIN-WIN for those looking to stay busy, make money and perhaps help their families as they enter the Post-Residential phase in their process or have completed the program successfully.
You MUST have picture ID, and be prepared for Drug Screening and National Background checks as part of BBSI’s intake process. The application process at our offices can take up to 3 hrs, depending on the applicant and the placement they are being considered for. ALL INTAKE IS BY APPOINTMENT ONLY, so we do NOT take walk-ins for this process. BBSI has offices in KENT (2) & FIFE, so one of those locations will be where they will initially visit and work with one of my staff of recruiters & HR Professionals.

As a board member of the Washington Youth Academy Foundation, we have a one-day fundraising event called the Kitsap Great Give on May 3rd.  It is simple to participate, just go to our page at https://kitsapgreatgive.org/npo/washington-youth-academy-foundation on May 3rd and use the donation form.  Your donation is matched by corporate sponsors so your $100 donation could be as much as $120 after the sponsor donations are tabulated.  Your donation helps at-risk youth who have dropped out of high school learn to succeed.  The donations go to support education programs like the library, science and technology, community service, scholarships for summer school, college, trade and vocational school and so much more.  Thank you for your help, together we can make a difference in a young person’s life.

Successful Commencement for Class 2015-2

12/27/2015

The Washington Youth Academy Foundation had another great event at the 2015-2 Commencement on December 19th.  Cadets and families were eager to get a memento of logo wear, challenge coins and picture flash drives to remember the experience afforded by the WYA.
The event would not have been as successful except for the great support of the following WYA Boosters:  Julie Chissus, Amanda Hoffman, Kris Privett, and Martin & Lazina Nethkin.  I also want to thank the following past parents and mentors for their help: Tamara Roberts and Kim Smith.
A special thank you to our newest Booster member, Patricia Gonzalez de Sanchez for her expert translation services supporting the Foundation and the Academy.
Well done by all!
